About College:
The Institute grew out of the Palit Research Laboratory in Physics of the University of Calcutta (CU). Professor M N Saha came back from Allahabad in 1938 to succeed Sir C V Raman in the Palit Chair of Physics. In the discovery of Nuclear Fission by Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassman in 1939, he had seen immense potential of nuclear science for betterment of the country. By 1940 he had had the syllabus of the Post-Graduate Physics reorganised to include Nuclear Physics in the Physics curriculum. Multifarious experiments in Nuclear Physics and instrumentation had started in his laboratory. Soon a small-scale cyclotron was felt necessary for gaining a first-hand knowledge in this virgin field. He decided to have it built here rather than buying one. Thanks to Jawaharlal Nehru's help and Dorabji Tata's generosity, fund was soon available for procurement of parts of the machine. Courtesy to the University a piece of land became available within the University College of Science campus in Rajabazar at 92 Upper Circular Road (now known as Acharya Prafulla Chandra Road) for erecting a building to house the machine. In fact, the laboratory was already too small to contain the spate of activity.
Course Name:
PhD in Physics and Biophysical Sciences
Eligibility:
Physics: M.Sc. degree in Physics.
Biophysical Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry (with Life Science at 10+2 level) or M.Sc. in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level).
Students appearing in the final examinations for their M.Sc. degrees during the current academic session may also apply. However, their selection will be on provisional basis and admission will be subject to successfully passing the final examination in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP.
Selection procedure
A first screening will be made based on previous academic records of the applicants.
A further shortlisting of candidates will be made based on the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below:
For Physics:
i) Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)
ii) GATE in Physics
iii) CSIR/UGC NET for JRF in Physics
For Biophysical Sciences:
i) Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR
ii) CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR NET for JRF
iii) GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry
The short-listed candidates will be called for interview to be held at SINP (during May-June 2020).
The information about the interview will be sent by e-mail and also announced in our web page.
The final selection of candidates will be done on the basis of their performances in all the above stages of screening and interview.
The selected candidates will be informed by e-mail and also through announcement in our web page.
Important Information
Please note that candidates seeking admission to SINP Ph.D. programmes need to apply through online application portal with hall ticket number/rank/percentile marks of national level qualification tests like JEST, JGEEBILS, NET, GATE.
Fellowships and benefits
The selected students are admitted to Post M.Sc. as Junior Research Fellow (JRF). Depending on the selection procedure and eligibility in nation-wide screening tests, there are two kinds of fellowships the students can enjoy:
i) SINP fellowships for candidates who are selected through JEST, JGEEBILLS, GATE:
Rs. 31,000/- p.m. for 1st two years
Rs. 35,000/- p.m. for subsequent years
Tenure: Fellowships are awarded for a maximum of 5 years. These fellowships are renewed yearly, subject to satisfactory performance.
Contingency, HRA etc. as per rule.
ii) Extramural fellowships awarded by external funding authorities of Govt of India (UGC, CSIR, DBT and ICMR) for candidates who are selected through NET.
For extramural fellowships, the amount of fellowship, contingency grant, HRA and other benefits will be as per CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR rules (SINP will take no financial responsibility for students selected in this scheme).
For all candidates, limited hostel accommodation will also be available.
