About College:

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is one among the foremost institutes of national importance in higher technological education, basic and applied research. In 1956, the German Government offered technical assistance for establishing an institute of higher education in engineering in India. The first Indo-German agreement in Bonn, West Germany for the establishment of the Indian Institute of Technology at Madras was signed in 1959.

The Institute was formally inaugurated in 1959 by Prof. Humayun Kabir, Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. The IIT system has sixteen Institutes of Technology. The first of these to be instituted are at Kharagpur (estb. 1951), Mumbai (estb. 1958), Chennai (estb. 1959), Kanpur (estb. 1959), Delhi(estb. 1961), Guwahati (estb. 1994) and Roorkee (estb. 1847, joined IITs in 2001).

IIT Madras is a residential institute with nearly 550 faculty, 8000 students and 1250 administrative & supporting staff and is a self-contained campus located in a beautiful wooded land of about 250 hectares. It has established itself as a premier centre for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country.

The Institute has sixteen academic departments and a few advanced research centres in various disciplines of engineering and pure sciences, with nearly 100 laboratories organised in a unique pattern of functioning. A faculty of international repute, a brilliant student community, excellent technical & supporting staff and an effective administration have all contributed to the pre-eminent status of IIT Madras. The campus is located in the city of Chennai, previously known asMadras. Chennai is the state capital of Tamilnadu, a southern state in India.

Candidates must have passed for the first time in 2016 or should be appearing in 2017 in any one of the following qualifying examinations (QE):

The final examination of the 10+2 system, conducted by a Central or State Board recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination conducted by a Board or University recognized by the Association of Indian Universities.

Final examination of the two-year course of the Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy.

Senior Secondary School Examination conducted by the National Institute of Open Schooling with a minimum of five subjects.

Any Public School, Board or University examination in India or in a foreign country recognized as equivalent to the 10+2 system by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

H.S.C. vocational examination.

Candidates must pay the examination fee as applicable is through net banking/ credit card/ debit card/ Indian bank challan that will be generated during the process of application.

The examination fee for Female/ SC/ ST/ PwD candidates is Rs.1100/-.

The examination fee for all other categories is Rs. 2200/-. Additionally, the service charges of the bank will be Rs.30/-.

Selection Procedure for IIT, Madras:

Candidates will be selected on the basis of their performance in the written test Humanities & Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) -2016 conducted by the institute.

Paper Pattern for HSEE 2017:

·         HSEE-2017 examination is of three hours duration and has two parts.

·         Part I consists of objective type multiple choice questions for 2½ hours duration (150 minutes), administered through computer.

·         Part II involves essay writing for 30 minutes to be written on answer sheet distributed to the candidates at the end of part I.

·         Part I covers the following topics: English and Comprehension Skill; Analytical and Quantitative Ability; General Studies covering the areas of Indian Economics (sinceIndependence), Indian Society, Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II); and (iv) Environment and Ecology.

·         Part II requires the candidate to write an essay on general topic involving deion, or/and reflection or/and discussion.
