About College:

The University of Calcutta was established by an Act of the Legislative Council (Act No II of 1857) of the then British India. A supplementary Act empowering the University to confer some additional degrees was passed in 1860. Another Act was passed in 1884 by which the University was authorised to confer honorary Degree of Law.The University Act of 1904 empowered the University to make necessary arrangements for the instruction of students, and though most of the teaching continued to be imparted in the affiliated colleges, teaching in some of the higher branches began to be organised under the University management.The Calcutta University Act, 1951, which came into operation from March, 1954 brought about important changes in the constitution and character of the University. The Act provided for Postgraduate teaching in some of the affiliated colleges along with the University Colleges. The Calcutta University Act, 1966 was passed with a view to providing for the reorganisation of the University that came into force on September 18, 1968.The University is now being governed by the Calcutta University Act, 1979 as amended up to 31 May, 2006. The Act provided for the reconstitution of the University to enable it to function more efficiently in the fields of teaching, training and research in various branches of learning and courses of study and extending higher education to meet the growing needs of the society and to make the constitution of various authorities and bodies of the University more democratic.

Eligibility:

Candidates with M.Sc. in any branch of Life Sciences, Chemistry, Physics from any UGC recognized University of Institute with 55% marks in aggregate (SC, ST & OBC with 50% marks) will be eligible to apply.

How To Apply:

Candidates can obtain the application form.

Candidates need to pay application fee of Rs. 100/- (in cash only) in the University Cash Counter.

The completed application form along with self-attested copies of M.Sc./B.Tech and NET/ SET/ SLET/ GATE/ M.Phil/ SC/ ST/ OBC certificates (if applicable) will have to be submitted at the departmental office.

Selection Procedure for University of Calcutta:

The admission procedure consists of a written examination followed by interview for candidates successful in the same.

The candidates who have cleared UGC/ CSIR (JRF)/ NET/ SET / SLET/ valid GATE/ Teacher Fellowship/ Inspire Fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations or passed the M.Phil examination shall not be required to appear at the Ph.D entrance test; however, they are to appear for the interview.

Last date for submission of application form: Monday, February 16, 2017.

Issuance of admit cards:Monday, February 20, 2017.

Date of written test:Thursday, February 23, 2017.

Date of interview: Monday, March 06, 2017.

Candidates with M.Tech (Optics and Optoelectronics/ Electronics & Telecommunication/ Instrumentation or equivalent), M.Sc (Tech) in Optics and Optoelectronics, B.Tech in the relevant field with at least 5 years of R&D experience and M.Sc (Physics/Electronics/Biomedical Instrumentation or equivalent), may apply.

Candidates should apply in the prescribed proforma (available at University website) along with Rs.100/- paid through a challan at any cash counter of the University.  

Selection Procedure for University of Calcutta:

The admission procedure consists of a Research Eligibility Test (RET) followed by viva-voce for candidates successful in the same.

Students who have cleared UGC /CSIR (JRF) Examinations/ NET/SET/SLET/GATE/Teacher Fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations or passed the M.Phil/ M.Tech/ M.D/ M.E/ M.Pharm or equivalent examination shall not be required to appear at the Ph.D entrance (written) test.
