FILM AND TELEVISION INSTITUTE OF INDIA

Established as 'Film Institute of India' in 1960 on the erstwhile Prabhat Studio premises at Pune, FTII boasts of a rich legacy in quality Indian cinema. The Prabhat Studios were declared heritage sites by the Pune Municipal Corporation and are used by the students to this day. The Institute was renamed 'The Film and Television Institute of India' in 1971. The Television Wing, earlier located at the Mandi House, New Delhi was shifted to Pune in the early seventies, bringing together the training in film and television under a common roof. At its inception in 1974, the Television wing was concerned with the provision of in-service training to personnel from Doordarshan. This Wing has in recent years launched a one-year course in Television.

The Institute has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Today, the FTII is commonly regarded as a center of excellence across the world. Films made by the students of the Institute have enjoyed excellent receptions in festivals in India and abroad and have gone on to win National and International awards.  The alumni of the FTII have left an indelible imprint across all facets of Indian Cinema and television and have built an excellent reputation in its allied industries.

The FTII is an autonomous body under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting of the Government of India. Its policies are determined by a Governing Council. The latter appoints the director of the institute.

The FTII is a member of CILECT, an international association of film schools.

About College:

COEP's precursor, The Poona Engineering Class and Mechanical School was opened in July 1854, with an aim to provide suitable learning to the subordinate officers in the Public Works Department. The School was situated in Bhawani Peth, Poona , and the accommodation consisted of three small detached houses for teaching purposes and a separate house for the Principal.

In June 1865 Mr. Theodore Cooke, M.A , who held that appointment for 28 years was appointed Principal. The foundation stone of the new college was laid by His Excellency the Governor, Sir Bartle Frere, on the 5th August 1865.

College was affiliated to University of Bombay in 1866. In 1868 the College moved to the New Buildings. The college was divided into three departments for matriculated and unmatriculated students.

In 1879 two new classes, an Agricultural class and a Forest class , were added to the college , and the name of the college was changed from " The Poona Civil Engineering College " to " The College of Science".

Thanks to the vision in setting up such an establishment at Pune, the credit for most of the civil infrastructure in India goes to the alumni of this college, starting from none other than the most towering and illustrious engineers, Bharat Ratna Sir M. Visvesvarayya, in whose honor "Engineers Day" is celebrated. The school became "Poona Civil Engineering College", and subsequently in the year 1916, the nomenclature was changed to the "College of Engineering, Poona". It was initially affiliated to the University of Bombay for a degree of Licentiate in Civil Engineering known as LCE and later to the University of Pune. The degree programs in civil engineering, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering were started in 1908, 1912 and 1932, respectively. From then on, the college has gone on expanding adding new departments and new wings by the year. 

In 2003, the college got autonomous status, thus giving it the freedom to set its own curricula and manage its own finances. This has been the biggest change as far as pedagogy at COEP is concerned.
Today, COEP offers nine UG and twenty-three PG programmes, and has more than 3200 students enrolled in its various courses.

The University Grants Commission vide their Letter No. F.No. 3-2/90 (CPP-1) dated 17th August 2002, have agreed to bring two more research institutions within the ambit of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University. During the year 2004, a Medical College at Sangli and a Dental College at Navi Mumbai have also been brought No. F. 9-7/2004-U.3 within the ambit of this University by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India vide its notification dt. 19th August, 2004.

SIBM, Pune Established in 1978, SIBM Pune is in its 35th year of service to the student community. It remains the flagship brand of Symbiosis and is recognized as one of the best Business Schools in India. In the year 1979, SIBM Pune proved its pioneering self by becoming the only institute in Pune to organize a seminar outside the city precincts - in Mumbai. Soon the trend was set and others followed suit. The concept of Internships / Summer Training was another offering made by SIBM to Pune. It was in 1982 that learning cum training scheme was started.

Supplementary training courses were included in the curriculum to supplement the Pune University syllabus. Little wonder that the same year SIBM Pune started being ranked among the top B-schools in India. The same year saw SIBM Pune organize 3 national level seminars all outside the city of functioning. It would be interesting to point out that the first computer that was installed at SIBM Pune was donated by students in 1987. Switch to the completely Wi-Fi enabled campus of 2005, also incidentally a students’ initiative – SIBM Pune has certainly come a long way. In 1990, permanent affiliation was received from Pune University – the only B-school to have ever received it. In 1996 the BASE programme was introduced, in addition to the curriculum of Pune University. The same year witnessed SIBM Pune shift to its new campus with well-equipped infrastructure.

The icing on the cake came in 2002 - when SIBM became part of Symbiosis International University because of its excellent academic record. Further in 2006 the UGC vide its notification withdrew the word Deemed and renamed the University as Symbiosis International University (SIU).
