About College:

The Institute of Life Sciences (ILS) located in Bhubaneswar has been brought under the fold of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India in August 2002. The institute was earlier under the administrative and financial control of Department of Science and Technology, Government of Orissa. Prime minister of India dedicated the institute to the nation on July 15, 2003 with a declaration to develop as a "National Centre for Excellence". The mandate of ILS is to undertake basic and translational research in frontier areas of life sciences. The research interests of the faculty are in three major areas: (a) Infectious Disease Biology, (b) Gene Function and Regulation and (c) Translation Research and Technology Development. In addition, new collaborations with industry have been established to tap commercial potential of laboratory science.

Course Name:

Ph.D. [Research Areas: Cancer Biology, Infectious Disease Biology, Interdisciplinary Areas]

Eligibility:

1.    Candidates should have passed their M.Sc./ M.Tech./ M.Pharm./ M.V.Sc. or equivalent qualification in life sciences and allied subjects (Biochemistry/ Biotechnology/ Bioinformatics/ Biophysics/ Chemistry/ Microbiology, etc.) with minimum of 60% marks (or equivalent grade point). Programming/scripting experience would be a plus for candidates interested in Bioinformatics. Candidates awaiting final results may also apply, however, if shortlisted, they have to produce their final mark sheet on the date of the interview, failing which they will not be interviewed.

2.    Candidates should have also qualified in CSIR/UGC-JRF or DBT-JRF or DBT-BINC-JRF or UGCRGNF or ICMR-JRF or DST-INSPIRE or GATE or GPAT. If the original certificate is not available, the candidate has to provide a photocopy of the original admit card and the particular result page highlighting their roll number, along with the application.

3.    The candidate should be below 28 years in age, as on 24th December, 2018. An age relaxation of five years in the case of SC/ST/women/PH candidates and three years in the case of OBC candidates will be given (as per Govt. of India rules).

Application Fees

Applicants except SC/ST candidates are required to send a non-refundable D.D. for Rs.500/- in favour of “Director, Institute of Life Sciences, Bhubaneswar” payable at Bhubaneswar.

The fellowship and other emoluments will be as per the guidelines of the funding agencies - SERB/DST/DBT/CSIR/ICMR and as revised from time to time.

To and fro bus/rail fare by the shortest route limited to second class sleeper will be paid to all the candidates appearing for the interview.

Interested and eligible candidates may fill-up the prescribed application form as available in ILS website. Duly filled-up application along with self-attested copies of all relevant certificates and demand draft should be send to the “Director, Institute of Life Sciences, Nalco Square, Bhubaneswar-751023”. The application should reach the Institute on or before the last date. Applications received after the last date will not be accepted. The envelope should be superscribed with “Application for Ph.D. Program in 1) Cancer Biology 2) Infectious Disease Biology or 3) Interdisciplinary Areas”. Candidates must mention clearly ONE of the research areas for which they are applying. Candidates interested to apply for more than one research area should send separate applications for each research area, with separate fees.

·         The admission application fee is as follows:

An applicant desirous of applying for the PGDM Programme at IMI Bhubaneswar only, will be required to pay a fee of Rs. 1000 (For International Student Application Fee will be USD 100).

An applicant desirous of applying to PGDM Programme at IMI Delhi and in any of the other campuses of IMI will be required to pay a common application fee of Rs.2200.

A certificate from the Head of the Institution stating their rank/ position must be furnished.

·         Candidates from any other disciplines with at least 60% marks in aggregate and with a demonstrable experience and interest in Urban and Regional Planning may also apply.

·         All shortlisted candidates (in all categories mentioned above) will have to appear for a Writing Ability Test and/or Personal Interview in one of the XUB Admission Centres in the country.

·         Final year degree students, who expect to complete their final exams and other requirements for obtaining the degree by 15th June 2019, can also apply

Selection Process

The short-listed candidates will be called for Writing Ability Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview, which will be held in Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai Candidates will have to meet their own travel expenses for appearing in the Interview session. The final selection will be made on the basis of the candidate’s performance in the Writing Ability Test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview (which factors in the past academic record and relevant work experience). The selected candidates will be informed by mail in the month of April 2019.

About College:

Until 1936, when Odisha was made into a separate province, all its colleges were under the jurisdiction of either Patna University or Andhra University. Subsequently, the government of Odisha, headed by Shri Biswanath Dash, the then Prime Minister; appointed a committee on 2nd March 1938 with Pandit Nilakantha Das as its Chairman to examine the possibility of establishing a separate university in Odisha. Then, during the premiership of Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati, who played a pioneering role in the establishment of the University, the recommendations of this committee were made available. Pandit Godavarish Mishra, the then Minister of Education, introduced the Utkal University Bill, which was passed by the Odisha Legislative Assembly on 30th June 1943. On receiving the Governor's assent on 2nd August 1943, the Utkal University Act, 1943 came into force, clearing the way for the foundation of Utkal University on 27th November 1943. The University started functioning from this date in room no. 15 of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack. The Utkal University Act, 1943 did not specify clearly the territorial jurisdiction of the University. However, its jurisdiction was extended to include the princely states of Odisha by an agreement between the rulers of these princely states and the Government of Odisha. According to the agreement, adequate representation of the princely states in the administrative and academic bodies of the University was ensured. The Utkal University Act, 1943 was amended in 1947 defining the territorial jurisdiction of the University, which was subsequently extended to the whole state of Odisha in 1950. Dr. Pranakrushna Parija, the then Principal of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack was the first Vice-Chancellor of the University, and Mr. V. V. John, the then Assistant Professor of English, Ravenshaw College was its first Registrar.

• Admission will be undertaken based on the scores of the candidates of CLAT-2018 and Entrance Examination of Xavier Law School, Xavier University.

• Candidates who are appearing or have appeared in the 10+2 examination and are awaiting results are also eligible to appear in the test. However, such candidates are required to have passed the qualifying examination at the time of their admission and must be able to submit proofs in support of their claims. No provisional admission shall be provided to those candidates who are not submitting the result of the qualifying examination (i.e. 10+2) at the time of admission.

• There will be no upper age limit for admissions to these programmes as prescribed by CLAT-2018.

• As regards minimum percentage of marks in the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2), the candidates must have secured 45% more from a recognized Board/Council of the respective State or at the National level.

• Candidates who are appearing in the qualifying examination in March/April, 2018 are also eligible to appear in CLAT-2018 online examination. However, they shall be required to produce an evidence of their passing the qualifying examination at the time of admission, failing which they shall lose their right to be considered for admission.

• The result of the qualifying examination (i.e., 10+2) shall be submitted by the candidate at the time of admission failing which the candidate shall be ineligible for admission to the Course.

• In case of equal marks, the break of tie shall be by the following procedure and order as under:

Selection Procedure for XIMB:

Applicants are required to take any one of the admission tests: XAT to be conducted by XLRI, Jamshedpur, or CAT to be conducted by IIMs or GMAT taken in 2015 or 2016 (minimum score for applying 550), or X-GMAT to be conducted Xavier University Bhubaneswar.

The institute will decide the section-wise as well as total cut-off marks which will be used for short-listing the candidates to be called for Written Ability Test (WAT), and Personal Interview (PI).

The final selection will be made on the basis of the candidate's performance in the XAT/ CAT/ GMAT/ X-GMAT as well as in the WAT, and PI (which factors in the past academic record and relevant work experience).

Admission Procedure: For MAT candidates: Based on merit list received from All India Management Association, New Delhi, candidates are called for group discussion and interview. Candidates who have appeared in other National level entrance test (MAT, CAT, XAT, etc.) may also apply for admission by sending a Demand Draft of Rs 500/- in favor of RCEM payable at Bhubaneswar for obtaining Brochure/application form directly from the College or by downloading from web site For CET candidates Who have given their choice of this college for MBA course study are required to obtained brochure with application form from the college administrative office and the submit the same to the principal. Selected students will be eligible to attend Group Discussion and Interview conducted by a committee of senior Faculty Members and basing on selection a merit List Is prepared. Candidates, who secure 50% and above in Merit rating, are considered and admitted in order of merit as per availability of seats, after personal interview. For JEE Candidates:-  Successful JEE rank holders should give their option to RCEM in JEE counseling which will be conducted by Chairman JEE, Govt. of Orissa.
