About College:

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was conceived as a ´Research Institute´ or ´University of Research´ by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, in the final years of the 19th century. A long period of almost thirteen years was to elapse from the initial conception in 1896 to the birth of the institute on May 27, 1909. The early history of the Institute is a fascinating chapter in the story of higher education and scientific research in India. The cast of characters in the drama that led to the establishment of the Institute includes, in addition to its charismatic and generous founder J.N. Tata, figures from the pages of Indian history. There is Swami Vivekananda, whom J.N. Tata befriended on his famous voyage to the United States, the Maharaja of Mysore, Shri Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV and his mother then acting on his behalf, and Lord Curzon the Viceroy of India, whose first task on arrival on December 31, 1898 was to receive a draft proposal prepared by the Provisional Committee set up to plan the establishment of the Institute. The plan was shepherded through many difficult years by Burjorji Padshah, a close associate of J.N. Tata. Unfortunately, J.N. Tata died in 1904 unaware that his vision would indeed be realized a few years later. When the British Government fi nally issued the Vesting Order in 1909, an unmatched experiment in higher education and research was launched in India. IISc is truly the first example of a public-private partnership in this country; an institution, whose evolution over a century is testimony to the robustness of its foundations.

The Institute occupies nearly 400 acres of prime land in Bangalore, generously donated by the Maharaja of Mysore in March 1907. Indeed, the contribution from the princely state of Mysorewas the decisive element in determining the location of J.N. Tata´s proposed institution. Remarkably, in a gesture unmatched in the annals of private philanthropy in India, Tata did not wish his name to be associated with the Institute. His dream was to create an institution that would contribute to the development of India. The name, Indian Institute of Science, which was finally chosen, reflects in every way the wishes of J.N. Tata. Visitors to Bangalore who seek out IISc still have to ask local residents for directions to the ´Tata Institute´, a clear recognition that Jamsetji Tata´s act of generosity has remained undimmed in public memory, despite the passage of a century.

About College:

We are a relatively young but already well-known multidisciplinary research institute. Our mandate is to pursue and promote world-class scientific research and training at the frontiers of science and engineering. The Centre was established in 1989 by the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India, to mark the birth centenary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. However, the bulk of our growth has been in the past decade.

Our small size (around 40 faculty members, spread over several disciplines) is an advantage: not segregated in far-flung labs, our chemists, physicists, biologists and engineers rub shoulders throughout the day. This fosters a spirit of interdisciplinary collaboration which is one of the hallmarks of JNCASR.
In addition to our young and dynamic faculty, we have over 150 bright and energetic graduate students and state-of-the art experimental, computational and infrastructural facilities. We are a "Deemed University", granting Master's and Ph.D. degrees.

Researchers at the Centre are divided into seven units: Chemistry and Physics of Materials, Engineering Mechanics, Evolutionary and Organismal Biology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Theoretical Sciences, Educational Technology and Geodynamics. We also have two off-campus units at the Indian Institute of Science: the Chemical Biology and Condensed Matter Theory Units. Though it is of course difficult to quantify scientific performance, by all numerical indications (numbers of publications, citations, grants, patents filed, etc.), science at the Centre is flourishing. In the last few years, the Centre's faculty members have published their research in some of the most prestigious scientific journals, including Nature, Nature Medicine, Science, Evolution, the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Angewandte Chemie, the Journal of Fluid Mechanics, and Physical Review Letters. The work of the Centre's faculty is also being recognized by various awards.

We also support a range of educational outreach activities: every year, our highly competitive Summer Research Fellowship programme hosts some of the very brightest undergraduates in the country; the Educational Technology Unit produces a range of teaching aids and educational material; we organize and teach short term courses at universities across India; and promising young chemists and biologists are trained intensively as part of our programmes of Project-Oriented-Chemical-Education (POCE) and Project-Oriented-Biological-Education (POBE).

Our faculty and students benefit from interacting with scientists at the many research institutions in the greater Bangalore area. The intellectual atmosphere at JNCASR is further livened by a regular stream of visitors from all over the world, who contribute to spirited scientific discussions at seminars, conferences and summer schools.

1962: Indian Plywood Manufacturers’ Research Association (IPMRA) was formed as a co-operative research laboratory under the umbrella of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for undertaking applied research on PLYWOOD, an important wood based panel material.

1970: The Institute was re-designated as Indian Plywood Industries Research Institute (IPIRI)

1978: Administrative control was transferred to the Ministry of Industry, Govt. of India so as to bring it under user Ministry

1988: Realizing the need for trained manpower for wood based panel industries, training facilities in Mechanical Wood Industries Technology were established with the assistance of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/Government of India (GOI).

1990: As recognition to the greater role of the Institute in conservation of natural resource, the administrative control was transferred to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.

In developing the National Centre for Biological Sciences we were guided by Abraham Flexner when he proposed the creation of theInstitute of Advanced Study in Princeton. Flexner pithily expressed his views that the Institute "... should be small, its staff and students or scholars should be few, the administration should be inconspicuous, inexpensive and subordinate; the members of the teaching staff while freed from the waste of time involved in administrative work, should freely participate in decisions involving the quality and direction of its activities; the living conditions should represent a marked improvement over contemporary academic conditions... its subjects should be fundamental in character, and it should develop gradually...". The founder of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research , Homi Bhabha, looked upon the Institute not merely as a place for doing good physics but as an instrument for growing science and scientific culture in India. TIFR’s research activities in physics, mathematics, biology and other areas are well known. Somewhat less known is the fact that it has helped to create a number of other institutions. 1962: Indian Plywood Manufacturers’ Research Association (IPMRA) was formed as a co-operative research laboratory under the umbrella of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) for undertaking applied research on PLYWOOD, an important wood based panel material.

1970: The Institute was re-designated as Indian Plywood Industries Research Institute (IPIRI)

1978: Administrative control was transferred to the Ministry of Industry, Govt. of India so as to bring it under user Ministry

1988: Realizing the need for trained manpower for wood based panel industries, training facilities in Mechanical Wood Industries Technology were established with the assistance of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)/Government of India (GOI).

1990: As recognition to the greater role of the Institute in conservation of natural resource, the administrative control was transferred to the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Govt. of India.

1992: As a reflection to its premier position in training for Mechanical Wood Industries Technology as a centre of excellence, the name of the Institute was changed to Indian Plywood Industries Research and Training Institute (IPIRTI)

Candidates from all over the country can appear for the said entrance examination. The eligibility criteria for Post Graduate Degree , Diploma programs have been as published by COMEDK in its Notification dated 15-09-2017 on its website which are reproduced as under:- 

a.     Applicants must meet all the requirements stipulated by MCI, DCI from time to time.

b.     They should have successfully passed their MBBS, BDS from an Institution recognized by MCI, DCI.

c.      They must have completed or be completing their internship by 30th April 2017 at the latest.

d.     The minimum percentage of marks in the COMEDK PGET – 2017 shall be 50% for General Merit candidates and 40% for the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe (All India) and Other Backward Classes belonging to Karnataka State.

e.     They should have obtained permanent registration with the MCI, DCI or any of the State Medical, Dental Council.

f.       Candidates who are unacceptable:

 (i)   Candidates already holding a PG Degree in any specialty. 

(ii) Candidates who are pursuing a PG Degree, Diploma in any clinical specialty after securing the seat through COMEDK in the earlier years. 

(iii)           Candidates having selected a seat earlier through COMEDK and failed to join the college so selected or failed to surrender the said seat at the COMEDK level or having joined the college failed to pursue the course. 

(iv)           Candidates who have been debarred by COMEDK during the previous years for any examination malpractice. 

Note:

a.     Notwithstanding the eligibility criteria mentioned as above, the changes, if any, effected by MCI, DCI or any other competent Regulatory Authorities shall be adopted.

b.     In the case of an Indian national with the recognized degree from a Foreign University, the degree should have been duly registered in the country where the degree is obtained and should also have been recognized by the Medical, Dental Council of India.

c.      Rank list, Rank Card will be prepared only for those candidates who become eligible for admission to Post Graduate Courses as per the regulations of Medical Council of India, Dental Council of India.

COMEDK PGET Test 2017 Pattern

The Entrance Test COMEDK PGET 2017 is mandatory for all candidates seeking admissions to PG Courses in Member Institutions of COMEDK for the academic year 2017-18

A merit, rank list is generated based on the candidate's scores in entrance test only

The scope of the syllabi for the Post Graduate Medical, Dental entrance test is based on the MBBS, BDS syllabus as prescribed by MCI, DCI respectively

There will be one separate test for PG Medical and one separate test for PG Dental Courses. Each test will have 180 Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ)

The time allotted for the COMEDK Entrance Test would be 180 minutes (3 hours); the COMEDK PGET entrance test will begin at 10.00 AM and end at 01.00 PM

i) Candidates are required to mark their answers in an OMR Answer Sheet (Optical Mark Reader)

ii) Each correct answer is awarded one mark

iii) No Marks will be awarded for multiple making (marking multiple responses) of any questions

iv) There will be no negative marking

v) However, in the event of a tie in score the principle of least negative responses (number of wrong answer) will be adopt
