A research institute in the frontline areas of biology and biotechnology of microorganisms, with state of the art facilities.

Introduction to the Lab

Established in 1984, the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) is one among the chain of 37 national laboratories, 6 units and 39 outreach centres of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research. Set-up to be a fore-runner in the niche domain of microbial biotechnology, the Institute in its initial years functioned from a start-up laboratory that provided a truly world-class R&D ambience in an area of over 10,000 sq. ft. to its researchers. In September, 1989, upon completion of the permanent campus, the Institute shifted to occupy an area of about 47 acres, of which the labs covered 22 acres and the residential campus 25 acres. The Institute covering a built up area of about 3.60 lakh sq. ft., is spread over four main buildings, namely, Main R&D block, Fermentation block, Animal House, Workshop, Stores and Services area, several service building including a guest house and Cafeteria. Recently another block of almost 50000 sq. ft. area (the G.N. Ramachandran Protein Centre) has been added, to cater to R&D in all aspects of Protein science and engineering. The Institute provides laboratories which are functionally modular  and offer large, air-conditioned, clean research areas to all the scientists.

The Institute's primary asset is a team of more than 55 highly motivated scientists, with a majority of them having several years of training in world renowned laboratories. Supported by more than 300 well trained technical staff and graduate students, these scientists have built strong peer credibility both in basic and application-oriented broad thematic areas of Molecular biology and microbial genetics, Cell biology and immunology, Protein science and engineering, and Fermentation technology and applied microbiology.  These overarching focus areas required enabling research facilities, structures and practices which IMTECH has created over the years, recognized nationally to be the best, and globally at par with the best.  This required a visionary approach and objectives with a long term mandate of scientific relevance.
IMTECH’s team of scientists having cutting edge R&D expertise in the areas of: Cloning & expression of recombinant / engineered proteins & their scale-up, Understanding / manipulating proteins and their engineering, Protein structure determination through X-ray crystallography, Molecular microbiology of pathogens especially with respect to drug resistance & vaccine development, Immunology of infectious diseases, Yeast Genetics, Screening of microorganisms for novel enzymatic activities and strain improvement, Bioinformatics & high end computational biology, Microbial taxonomy and metagenomics, and allied areas like technology and business management and intellectual property protection.

Eligibility and Selection: Candidates with Master's Degree or equivalent in any branch of science (Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences, Microbiology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Biotechnology, Pharmacy) or in chemical/biochemical engineering who have qualified to be eligible to receive a doctoral junior research fellowship (JRF) after passing any of the following examinations are eligible to be interviewed: CSIR/UGC NET, DBT JRF examination, or ICMR JRFexamination. Those who come for interview must be prepared to be present in Chandigarh for at least three days, which is the approximate time required to finalize the admission of successful candidates.  No TA/DA or any other expenses will be paid for appearing in the interview. Candidates whose result for qualifying examination is awaited, but likely to be declared on or before the interview date may also apply; however, they will be allowed to appear in the interview only after they produce a valid proof of having passed the qualifying masters’ level examination (e.g., a letter from the relevant Head of Department). Candidates must also state their present occupation, if any, before the interview; any concealment may result in cancellation of admission at any stage. Age limit: 28 years. (Age relaxation is applicable to SC/ST and OBC candidates as per Govt. of India rules). The decision of the Director, IMTECH, regarding selection/admission of the candidates shall be final.

The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. The institute started in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. About College:

In realization of the need for training better quality technicians to meet the large scale industrialization of the country, the ministry of Human Resource Development (the then Ministry of Education), Government of India established four Regional Technical Teachers' Training Institutes (now National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, NITTTR at Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai and Kolkata in 1967. The Institute at Chandigarh is one of these four NITTTRs, started in collaboration with Royal Netherlands Government (upto 1974). It was designed to meet the requirements of developing polytechnic education in the northern region covering the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Delhi and Union Territory of Chandigarh. The Institute is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and is managed by a Board of Governors.

The institute started with long term teachers' training programmes for polytechnic teachers in 1967 and was also entrusted with the responsibility of promoting curriculum development work for the states in the region. To improve the competence of teachers for implementing new curricula designed by this institute, short term courses have been offered since 1967. The institute established a Media Centre in 1981 for preparing print & non-print instructional materials.

The institute also set up the department of Rural Development and the department of Entrepreneurship Development to assist polytechnics in directing their efforts towards training manpower and disseminating information in these areas. The Educational Television and Computer Science departments were established in the year 1981and 1982 respectively. Since 1983, the institute has been guiding and assisting the states in the areas of Educational Planning and Management. Since 1992, the institute started offering Regular Master of Engineering Programmes in (i) Engineering Education and (ii) Manufacturing Technology. In the year 1994, two more courses namely Master of Engineering in Construction Technology and Management and Computer Science and Engineering were added. In the year 1998, two more Master of Engineering Programmes in Instrumentation and Control and Electronics and Communication Engineering were added, and, since 2005, the institute started offering Modular Master of Engineering Programmes in all the above disciplines. All these programmes, being offered for teachers of technical institutions and their administrators, professionals from industry and general candidates, are duly approved by AICTE and affiliated to Panjab University,Chandigarh.

Since June 2001, this institute has been conducting short term courses in various subjects for faculty of Engineering Colleges in addition to organizing AICTE sponsored Induction Training Programmes.

The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. About College:

In realization of the need for training better quality technicians to meet the large scale industrialization of the country, the ministry of Human Resource Development (the then Ministry of Education), Government of India established four Regional Technical Teachers' Training Institutes (now National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, NITTTR at Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai and Kolkata in 1967. The Institute at Chandigarh is one of these four NITTTRs, started in collaboration with Royal Netherlands Government (upto 1974). It was designed to meet the requirements of developing polytechnic education in the northern region covering the states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Delhi and Union Territory of Chandigarh. The Institute is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and is managed by a Board of Governors.

The institute started with long term teachers' training programmes for polytechnic teachers in 1967 and was also entrusted with the responsibility of promoting curriculum development work for the states in the region. To improve the competence of teachers for implementing new curricula designed by this institute, short term courses have been offered since 1967. The institute established a Media Centre in 1981 for preparing print & non-print instructional materials.

The institute also set up the department of Rural Development and the department of Entrepreneurship Development to assist polytechnics in directing their efforts towards training manpower and disseminating information in these areas. The Educational Television and Computer Science departments were established in the year 1981and 1982 respectively. Since 1983, the institute has been guiding and assisting the states in the areas of Educational Planning and Management. Since 1992, the institute started offering Regular Master of Engineering Programmes in (i) Engineering Education and (ii) Manufacturing Technology. In the year 1994, two more courses namely Master of Engineering in Construction Technology and Management and Computer Science and Engineering were added. In the year 1998, two more Master of Engineering Programmes in Instrumentation and Control and Electronics and Communication Engineering were added, and, since 2005, the institute started offering Modular Master of Engineering Programmes in all the above disciplines. All these programmes, being offered for teachers of technical institutions and their administrators, professionals from industry and general candidates, are duly approved by AICTE and affiliated to Panjab University,Chandigarh.

Since June 2001, this institute has been conducting short term courses in various subjects for faculty of Engineering Colleges in addition to organizing AICTE sponsored Induction Training Programmes.

About College:

The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. The institute started in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. After the reorganization of the state, the administrative control of the institute passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966.  The Institute became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967 functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, with the following mandate. 

Provide high quality patient care. 

Attain self-sufficiency in postgraduate medical education and to meet the country’s need for highly qualified medical teachers in all medical and surgical fields.

Provide educational facilities for the training of personnel in all-important branches of health activity.

Undertake basic community based research.

The founders of this Institute Prof. Tulsi Das, Prof. Santokh Singh Anand, Prof. PN Chuttani, Prof. BN Aikat, Prof. Sant Ram Dhall and Prof. Bala Krishna laid the path of excellence for the Institute.

Mission of the University

The University has been incorporated for the purpose, among others, of imparting education in Arts, Letters, Science and the learned professions and of furthering advancement of learning, the prosecution of original research, with power to appoint University Professors, Readers and Lecturers, to hold and manage educational endowments, to erect, equip and maintain University colleges, libraries, laboratories and museums, to making regulations relating to the residence and conduct of students and to do all such acts as tend to promote study and research.

History and Present Infrastructure

The Panjab University has a long tradition of pursuing excellence in teaching and research in science and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. The University supports excellence and innovation in academic programmes, promotes excellence in research, scholarship and teaching and is committed to attracting and supporting the best students and faculty who excel at teaching and research. For more than a century, it has served various societal needs with distinction. The glorious traditions of the University established during the period of more than a hundred and thirty years of its long service to the nation since its inception in 1882 at Lahore (now in Pakistan) are a source of inspiration for the present generation of faculty members and students. By virtue of its age, experience, achievements and philosophy, the Panjab University is a University of national character and stature and draws both faculty and students from all over the country and abroad. Its faculty includes some of the most distinguished scientists and academicians. It continues to attract celebrated scholars who interact with the faculty and students. Over the years, the reputation of the Panjab University has grown into one of innovative teaching, research and community outreach. 
After the partition in 1947, the University was constrained to function for almost a decade without a campus of its own. The administrative office was located at Solan and the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar. In 1956, it was relocated at Chandigarh. Pierre Jeanerette designed the red sandstone University campus under the general guidance of the legendary Le Corbusier. Till the re-organisation of Punjab in 1966, the University had its regional centers at Rohtak, Shimla and Jalandhar and its affiliated colleges were located in the States of Punjab, Haryana and Himachal Pradesh and the U.T. of Chandigarh.

With the re-organization of Punjab, the University became an Inter-State Body Corporate catering to the newly organized States of Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab and the UT of Chandigarh. Gradually, the colleges of Himachal and Haryana were affiliated to the Universities in the respective states and the PanjabUniversity was left with the affiliated colleges in the UT of Chandigarh and some parts of Punjab. The Consultative Committee of the Government of India approved, in 1976, the ratio of 60:40 for the sharing of the maintenance deficit of the Panjab University by the Central Government (through the Chandigarh Administration) and the Government of Punjab respectively. Initially, the Government of Punjab restricted its share of maintenance grant to Rs.60 crore, but subsequently revised it to Rs.20 crore, irrespective of its actual share on the basis of the above stated ratio. To re-examine the ratio of funds between the Government of India and the Government of Punjab as well as to determine the optimum ratio of funds for the Panjab University, a new internal ministerial Consultative Committee was constituted by the Government of India. The Committee recommended that the Central Government may fund the University through the UGC after adjusting the funds provided by the Government of Punjab and the surplus from the self-financing courses. The annual budgeted expenditure and income of the University for the financial year 2015-16 amount to Rs.429.34 crore and Rs 133.68 crore respectively.

The Panjab University, with its 75 teaching and research departments besides 15 centers/chairs for the teaching and research on the main campus at Chandigarh, has more than 192 affiliated/constituent colleges spread over Punjab and Chandigarh besides Regional Centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur and Kauni. In addition, there is the Vishveshawaranand Vishva Bandhu Institute of Sanskrit and Indological Studies (VVBIS&IS) at Hoshiarpur.
