About College:

The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. The institute started in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. After the reorganization of the state, the administrative control of the institute passed on to the Union Territory of Chandigarh in November 1966.  The Institute became an autonomous body under the Act of Parliament in 1967 functioning under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, with the following mandate.

How to apply:

General Information: The candidate is required to fill the Application Form/Challan Form online which is available at the link provided by the PGI at website i.e. http://pgimer.edu.in. The candidate should take out a print of a challan form (in triplicate) and deposit the required application fee in any branch of State Bank of India. The Challan form is required to be filled up in the name of Director, PGIMER, Chandigarh (Examination) in the Power Jyoti Account No. 32211613319 and candidates can also pay their fee through payment gateway.

The number of seats wherever indicated are provisional and may increase/decrease without any prior notice. Incomplete applications will not be entertained and no correspondence will be made in this regard. The candidates are advised to retain one copy of Challan and take print out of application form after filling the same for future use. The amount of fee to be paid is as under:

The Punjab Agricultural University was established in 1962 to serve the state of erstwhile Punjab. On trifurcation of Punjab in November 1966, HaryanaAgricultural University was carved out of PAU by an Act of Parliament in February 1970. Later, in July 1970, Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidalya was established.  In 2006 the College of Veterinary Science was upgraded to become Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Science University (GADVASU) atLudhiana. The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) is located in Ludhiana city (Punjab State) in north-west India at a distance of 316 km from New Delhi. Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali (Punjab), an autonomous institution of Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, has been established under the umbrella of NANO MISSION, initiated by DST to boost research and development in the field of Nano science and Nanotechnology in India. Detailed criteria set by individual departments for PhD admissions:

·         Department of Biological Sciences: The applicant should have M. Sc./ B. Tech/ MBBS/ M. Tech or equivalent degree and should have a valid GATE(Life Sciences/ Biotechnology/ Ecology and Evolution) / CSIR-UGC-NET/ ICMR/ DBT/ DST-Inspire fellowship.

·         Department of Chemical Sciences:  The applicant should have M. Sc./MS degree in Chemistry/ Physics or equivalent with at least 55% marks for General and OBC candidates, and 50% for SC/ST and persons with Disability (PwD), and should have a valid NET/ GATE/ DST-Inspire/equivalent national level fellowship.
Department of Mathematical Sciences:  The applicant must have qualified one of the following examinations GATE/CSIR-UGC-NET/NBHM-JRF with Mathematics as the primary subject. Applicants who have obtained the DST-INSPIRE fellowship must have taken Mathematics as their primary subject during their Master's programme.  Only applicants with an outstanding academic record and exceptional qualifications will be considered for admission.

·         Department of Physical Sciences: The applicant should have a Masters degree in Physics or a Bachelors/Masters degree in Engineering, and should have a valid GATE/ CSIR-UGC-NET-JRF/ JEST/ DST-Inspire fellowship in Physics. The student must have a good academic record in M.Sc. (minimum 55% for General and OBC category, minimum 50% for SC/ST/PD.)

·         Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences: The applicant should have M.Sc./ B.Tech/ M. Tech in Atmospheric Sciences/ Earth and Environmental Sciences/ Geology/Chemistry/ Physics/ Environmental Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biotechnology and should have a valid GATE/ CSIR-UGC-NET/ DST-Inspire fellowship.

·         Department of Humanities and Social Sciences: The PhD applicant should have M.A./M.Sc./M.Phil degree (minimum 55% for General and OBC category, minimum 50% for SC/ST/PD.) in one or more of the following subjects: Philosophy (Ethics, Indian Philosophy, Analytical Philosophy and Philosophy of Science)/ Sociology/Anthropology/ Palaeoanthropology/Archaeology / Ancient Indian History / Modern Indian History / Urban History / Political Economy / Gender Studies /Urban Studies / English Literature/Postmodernism/ Literary Theory/Science-in-theatre or related areas such as Development Studies, South Asian studies. In realization of the need for training better quality technicians to meet the large scale industrialization of the country, the ministry of Human Resource Development (the then Ministry of Education), Government of India established four Regional Technical Teachers' Training Institutes (now National Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research, NITTTR at Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai and Kolkata in 1967. After partition of the country, the Punjab College of Engineering & Technology, Lahore (formerly known as the Maclagan Engineering College) of the pre-partitioned Punjab remained in Pakistan under the name of "East Punjab Engineering College". From December 1947, it functioned in the premises of the Thomson engineering College, Roorkee now known as Indian Institute of Technology (Roorkee). Academic Eligibility

Residential Requirement

All foreign nationals studying in any country including India or Indian nationals studying abroad who fulfill prescribed admission criteria shall be eligible.

Prescribed admission criteria for Indian Nationals shall be at least two years of education, inclusive of 11th & 12th or equivalent (not beyond), in a foreign country during the last 8 years and must pass the qualifying examination from abroad.

Eligibility:

1. Eligibility for Full-time Research Student/Candidate

An applicant belonging to the above admission categories should possess the following qualifications in appropriate areas to be eligible to apply for admission for the Ph.D. programme of the Institute.

a) Engineering Technology streams: Master’s degree in Engineering/ Technology of 2 years duration after graduation in respective discipline or equivalent with a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the Institute wherever letter grades are awarded; or 60% marks in aggregate (of all the years/semesters) where marks are awarded. OR

b) Science/ Humanities & Social Science, Management Streams: Master’s degree in Science/ Humanities & Social Sciences/ Management in respective discipline or equivalent with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 6.00 on a 10 point scale or equivalent as determined by the Institute where letter grades are awarded; or 60% marks where marks are awarded. Candidates with valid GATE/ NET score shall be given preference.

c) The admission eligibility requirements may be relaxed to 5.5 on a 10 point scale or equivalent, or to 55% marks for admission in all categories of scholars for the following categories: i) SC/ST candidates ii) PwD (Persons with disability) Candidates with valid GATE/ NET score shall be given preference.

2. Direct Admission of B.E./B.Tech. candidates to Ph.D. programme

a)     All candidates having B.E./B. Tech degree would be eligible for admission to Ph.D. program

b)     To be eligible for the admission under this category, a candidate is required to have minimum CGPA of atleast:

i)                    9.0 (on a scale of 10) at the end of the seventh semester (if applying during final year) under Open category.

ii)                  9.0 (on a scale of 10) at the end of the eighth semester (if applying after the completion of B.E./ B.Tech) under Open category.

iii)                 For SC/ST category students, the minimum CGPA requirement will be 8.5.

c)     Candidates should have a valid GATE/NET score. Selection to program would be made on the basis of GATE/NET score and interview.

d)     Successful candidates in final year of undergraduate programme may be given provisional admission to the Ph.D programme. This admission shall be confirmed provided the student completes his/her undergraduate programme with required graduation CGPA.

e)     Under exceptional circumstances, when a student is unable to complete the requirement of the Ph.D. prograame, an exit option with the M.Tech. degree will be available at any time after the end of two years, subject to completion of required course work and M.Tech. dissertation.

f)       B.E./B.Tech students taking direct admission to Ph.D. programme will be required to complete mandatory course work in the first two semesters (similar to that of M.Tech. programme). Successful completion of State-of Art proposal and additional course requirements as per UGC guidelines after additional one year may entitle the student to assistantship as admissible for Ph.D. students with Master’s qualification.

3. Eligibility for Part-time Ph.D

a)     The eligibility criteria shall be the same as that for full time students. Additionally, the part time candidates need to fulfill the following conditions and provide the information along with the application:

1.      The applicants must have been in continuous service with the sponsoring organization for at least two years at the time of submitting the application form for admission and submit ‘No Objection Certificate’ from the employer stating that (i) He/she is on the regular payroll of the organization, (ii)He/she is permitted to pursue studies on a part-time basis, and (iii) His/her official duties will permit sufficient time for research. Sponsorship letter (on letterhead of the sponsoring organization) should include an undertaking stating that the period of study of the candidates will be treated as ‘on duty’ with usual salary/allowances, and he/she will be relieved for the period of studies.

2.      He/ She will be required to reside at the Institute for a period of not less than one semester i.e. six months duration which is mandatory in the first year of Ph.D Programme. (This condition of minimum residence period will be automatically waived for candidates who are working in PEC or in Organizations/ institutions located within a distance of 50 km from the Institute).

Note: 2. Ph.D. degrees which are pursued either full time or part time will be treated as degrees awarded through Regular Mode provided these are in conformity with the existing Statutes/Byelaws/Ordinances etc. of the degree awarding University. However, the Ph.D. acquired under distance mode is not permitted.
