About College:

Consequent upon the decision, taken by Govt. of India in 1985, to tender a valuable, yet humble tribute to the everlasting memory of the revered saint, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology took its shape. The institute was established by Ministry Of Human Resource and Development (MHRD), Govt. of India in the year 1989 and was formally inaugurated on 20th December 1991. Accepting the new challenge of new education policy, Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering & Technology (SLIET) was established, with a vision to act as an international podium for the development and transfer of technical competence in academics. It is committed to provide best possible technical education and to cater to the technical manpower requirements with emphasis on practical training in industry.

Course Name:

Ph.D. [Research areas: Chemical Engineering , Chemistry, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical & Instrumentation Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Food Engineering & Technology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Physics]

Eligibility:

Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology / Science / Humanities / Management with 55% marks (50% for reserved categories) in relevant disciplines (MCA degree is not eligible for Ph.D.in CSE).

(i) Master’s Degree holders or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

(ii) A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, should be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/PwD (Differently-abled)/OBC (non-creamy layer)/ and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the Commission from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master's degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.

ADMISSION

Admission to Ph.D. Programmes is available in following categories:

(i)           Full Time (with fellowship)*

(ii)          Full Time (without fellowship)

(iii)         Part Time

How to Apply:

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

(a) Admission to the Ph.D. programmes will be based on TWO STAGE PROCESS through:

(i) An ENTRANCE TEST (SET-V) shall be QUALIFYING with qualifying marks as 50%. The syllabus of the Entrance Test shall consist of 50% of research methodology and 50% shall be subject specific. The Entrance Test shall be conducted at SLIET only; and

a) Based on number of candidates to be called for interview, Department can set a higher cut off marks.

b) The PhD Entrance Test (SET-V) will consist of one paper of two hours duration. This paper will have 100 objective type questions (Multiple Choice) of total 100 marks.

(ii) An INTERVIEW/ PRES$ENTATION/ VIVA-VOCE wherein the candidates are required to discuss their research interest/area through a presentation or interview/viva-voce before a duly constituted Department Research Committee (DRC)/ Interview Panel. The interview/ presentation/ viva voce shall also consider the following aspects, viz. whether:

·         the candidate possesses the competence for the proposed research;

·         the research work can be suitably undertaken at the institution/College;

·         the proposed area of research can contribute to new/additional knowledge.

(b) The candidates who fulfill the conditions of eligibility criteria can apply online by 07.01.2019.

(c) The eligible candidates who have qualified GATE/ UGC/CSIR (JRF) NET with fellowship/ NET (ASRB) with fellowship/ State level eligibility test (SLET/SET) with fellowship (having valid score) are exempted from appearing for the entrance examination, However, they will submit the proof of having qualified the examination with valid score. But, they have to APPLY ONLINE. These candidates have to appear for the interview/presentation/viva voce.

(d) MERIT List: The interview will be applicable to the candidates who qualify SET-V and others who are EXEMPTED FROM APPEARING in SET-V as per (c). The admission will be given based on MERIT LIST, prepared on the basis of performance in interview/ presentation/ viva-voce.

(e) Decision of the Interview Panel/ DRC will be final in respect of suitability of candidate and his/ her qualifications for given department.

(f) The course Research Methodology is compulsory for all selected Ph.D. candidates.

(g) The Ordinances, Rules & Regulations for Ph.D. programmes of SLIET, Longowal shall be applicable to all the successful candidates as in force time to time. The guidelines of UGC notification dated 05 May, 2016 shall be applicable to all the candidates.

(h) For admission under PART-TIME CATEGORY, the candidate will have to submit the NOC from the employer at the time of counseling.

The PGIMER owes its inception to the vision of late Sardar Partap Singh Kairon, the then Chief Minister of Punjab and the distinguished medical educationists of the then combined state of Punjab, supported by the first Prime Minister of India Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru who considered the institutions of scientific knowledge as temples of learning and the places of pilgrimage. The institute started in 1962 and Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru inaugurated the hospital now named “Nehru Hospital” on 7th July 1963. The Institute was originally under the Government of undivided Punjab. Mechanical Engineering: 1) Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in Engineering/Technology. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks or 6.5 CGPA out of 10 in their Master's. OR

2) Master's degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/ CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification. Candidates must have obtained at least 65% marks or 7 CGPA out of 10 in their Master's. OR

3) Exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E degree with at least 65% marks or 7 CGPA out of 10 and valid GATE score can apply for PhD programme. The candidate who are in final year (seventh semester) of their B.Tech/BE program should apply under Direct PhD program. OR

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA score of 8.00 out of 10 and above are exempted from requirement of GATE to apply.

The relaxation in eligibility and reservation for SC/ST/OBC/PwD will be as per the rules of Govt. of India.

Metallurgical and Materials engineering: 1. Master's degree in relevant Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in relevant Engineering/Technology. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ST) in their Master's. OR

2. Exceptional candidates having relevant B.Tech./B.E. qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme. 2.    Ph.D in Sciences:

The Punjab Agricultural University was established in 1962 to serve the state of erstwhile Punjab. On trifurcation of Punjab in November 1966, HaryanaAgricultural University was carved out of PAU by an Act of Parliament in February 1970. ·         Department of Chemical Sciences:  The applicant should have M. Sc./MS degree in Chemistry/ Physics or equivalent with at least 55% marks for General and OBC candidates, and 50% for SC/ST and persons with Disability (PwD), and should have a valid NET/ GATE/ DST-Inspire/equivalent national level fellowship.
Department of Mathematical Sciences:  The applicant must have qualified one of the following examinations GATE/CSIR-UGC-NET/NBHM-JRF with Mathematics as the primary subject. Applicants who have obtained the DST-INSPIRE fellowship must have taken Mathematics as their primary subject during their Master's programme.  Only applicants with an outstanding academic record and exceptional qualifications will be considered for admission.

·         Department of Physical Sciences: The applicant should have a Masters degree in Physics or a Bachelors/Masters degree in Engineering, and should have a valid GATE/ CSIR-UGC-NET-JRF/ JEST/ DST-Inspire fellowship in Physics. The student must have a good academic record in M.Sc. (minimum 55% for General and OBC category, minimum 50% for SC/ST/PD.)

·         Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences: The applicant should have M.Sc./ B.Tech/ M. Tech in Atmospheric Sciences/ Earth and Environmental Sciences/ Geology/Chemistry/ Physics/ Environmental Biotechnology/Microbiology/Biotechnology and should have a valid GATE/ CSIR-UGC-NET/ DST-Inspire fellowship.

·         Department of Humanities and Social Sciences: The PhD applicant should have M.A./M.Sc./M.Phil degree (minimum 55% for General and OBC category, minimum 50% for SC/ST/PD.) in one or more of the following subjects: Philosophy (Ethics, Indian Philosophy, Analytical Philosophy and Philosophy of Science)/ Sociology/Anthropology/ Palaeoanthropology/Archaeology / Ancient Indian History / Modern Indian History / Urban History / Political Economy / Gender Studies /Urban Studies / English Literature/Postmodernism/ Literary Theory/Science-in-theatre or related areas such as Development Studies, South Asian studies.
