Chennai Mathematical Institute is a centre of excellence for teaching and research in the mathematical sciences. Founded in 1989 as part of the SPIC Science Foundation, it has been an autonomous institute since 1996.

The research groups in Mathematics and Computer Science at CMI are among the best known in the country. The Institute has nurtured an impressive collection of PhD students.

The Jagadguru Rambhadracharya Handicapped University was established to provide higher & professional education to persons with disabilities.

There are approximate 9 crore disabled in India. The coverage in formal school system is around 5%. The scenario of higher education is much grim. The socio economic condition and facilities available at higher education centre for persons with disability are considered to be major obstacle in accessing higher education. Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR) is an advanced research institute established and fully funded by the Reserve Bank of India for carrying out research on development issues from a multi-disciplinary point of view.

IGIDR was registered as an autonomous society on November 14, 1986 and as a public trust in January 1987. On December 28, 1987 the campus was inaugurated by Late. Shri Rajiv Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India.

Subsequently, the Institute was recognized as a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act.  Since then it has been awarded the highest National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) rating of A++ (under the old methodology) given to Indian academic institutions.

Starting as a purely research institution, it rapidly developed into a full-fledged teaching cum research organisation when it launched a Ph.D. program in the field of development studies in 1990. The objective of the Ph.D. programme is to produce researchers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds who can address issues of economics, energy and environment policies. In 1995, the institute initiated the M. Phil programme. The M.Sc. programme commenced in 2003 to introduce students to the world of research at an earlier stage.

At present the Institute has about 150 employees and students that include about 26 full time faculty members, 24 non-academic staff and about 90 M.Sc./M.Phil/Ph.D students.

History and Evolution: In January 2017 the Cabinet had decided to set up an Institute of Excellence to commemorate the Intellectual legacy of Dr. B R Ambedkar.The Bengaluru Dr. B. R. Ambedkar School of Economics is registered under the Karnataka Societies Registration Act of 1960 (Act No. 17 of 1960). Hon. President Pranab Mukherjee on 14th April 2017 laid the foundation stone for the Dr B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics in the Bengaluru University campus on the 126th birth anniversary of the architect of the Indian Constitution. Dr. Anup K. Pujari (IAS retired) is the special officer of the School thus established. The Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics, modeled on the London School of Economics, will begin classes from the upcoming academic year (2017-18) at the Jnana Bharathi campus of BangaloreUniversity. The Cabinet had allocated 43 acres of land for the purpose. The Karnataka government has sanctioned Rs 150 crore for setting up the school’s first phase, with an administrative block, student hostels, auditorium, three seminar halls and quarters for the faculty. The state government intends to run the School as an autonomous institution of international standard.
