(formerly B.S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College) has been established under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956. The University is located in the outskirts of Chennai city on the G.S.T. B. S. Abdur Rahman Crescent Engineering College, which has now been upgraded as B.S Abdur Rahman University, was an institution acclaimed throughout Indiafor its quality in teaching and research. In the last decade Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University (BVDU) has emerged as a global university with a wide offering of programs and courses spanning varied educational faculties. The University Grants Commission which is the apex body concerned with higher education in India made an assessment of the academic excellence achieved by the institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth through a committee of experts and on the recommendation of the UGC, the Government of India accorded the status of "Deemed to be University" to twelve institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune on 26th April, 1996 vide their notification No. F.9-15/95-U.3.

Later in July 2000 the Government of India on the recommendation of University Grants Commission and the All India Council for Technical Education brought three more institutions within the ambit of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University vide their notification No. F-9-15/95-4-3 dated 28th July, 2000. 

The University Grants Commission vide their Letter No. F.No. 3-2/90 (CPP-1) dated 17th August 2002, have agreed to bring two more research institutions within the ambit of Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University. During the year 2004, a Medical College at Sangli and a Dental College at Navi Mumbai have also been brought No. F. 9-7/2004-U.3 within the ambit of this University by Ministry of Human Resource Development, Govt. of India vide its notification dt. 19th August, 2004.

BPS - The First Women University in North India 

University holds the distinction of being the first Women University in North India.

The following types of students will be considered for admission

a)     Regular (Full Time). The students should have cleared GATE. Such students will receive institute assistantship.

b)     Sponsored (Full Time) Sponsored candidates (from Government Organisations, Public Sector Organizations, Other industries) may also be considered after their interviews, but no financial assistance will be provided to such candidates. They should have at least 2 years of work experience.

c)      Part-time students: Those who are employed in reputed institutes or in oil industries and have acquired a minimum of three years of experience can also apply for the registration as Part-Time Ph.D. students at RGIPT.

d)     External candidates with at least 3 years of experience in Government Organizations,  Public Sector Organizations, Other industries having adequate research facilities may be considered. In such cases the research work should be of interest to RGIPT and should be separate from the candidate’s regular work for the organization where the candidate is employed. Such candidates should work under a Supervisor within his parent organization and the overall guidance will be provided by the major guide from RGIPT under whom the candidate should register for Ph.D. No financial assistance will be provided to such candidates. AMET is established as a private maritime institute through Smt.Pattammal Educational and Charitable Trust with just 14 cadets in 1993.
