About College:

The genesis of the National Archives of India may be traced back to the year 1860 when Sandeman, the Civil Auditor, in his report stressed the need of relieving the offices of congestion by destruction of the papers of routine nature and transfer of all valuable records to a ‘Grand Central Archive’. However, things took a concrete shape in 1889, when Professor G.W. Forrest of Elphinstone College, Bombay was entrusted the job of examining the records of the Foreign Department of the Government of India. Earlier, he had earned reputation as an Archivist for his work in the Bombay Records Office. In his report, he made a strong plea for transferring all records of the administration of East India Company to a Central Repository. As a result, Imperial Records Department (IRD) came into existence on 11 March 1891 which was located in Imperial Secretariat Building at Calcutta (Kolkata). Professor G.W Forrest was made its Officer in Charge. His main task was to examine, transfer, arrange and catalogue records of all the Departments and to organise a Central Library in place of various Departmental Libraries. After G.W. Forrest, the work at Imperial Records Department (IRD) progressed well under S.C. Hill (1900), C.R. Wilson (1902), N.L. Hallward (1904), E. Denison Ross (1905), A.F. Scholfield (1915), R.A. Blaker (1919), J.M. Mitra (1920) and Rai Bahadur A.F.M. Abdul Ali (1922-1938) who were scholars as well as Records Keepers in their own right.

About College:

An Institution of Excellence in Legal Education and Research

The concept of a national law institution to act as a “pace-setter and a testing ground for bold experiments in legal education” came up before the Bar Council of India in the context of the Council’s statutory responsibility under the Advocates’ Act, 1961 for maintaining standards in professional legal education. The idea was transformed into reality by the Legal Education

Committee of the Bar Council of India and eventually assumed the character of an autonomous institution with “Deemed University” status from the University Grants Commission. Since its conceptualization and over the years the co-operation of the Karnataka Government and the Bangalore University and the initiatives of senior members of the Bar Council of India as well as that of Karnataka State Bar Council gave the project distinct possibilities of realization. The idea gained more supporters in course of time both within and outside the Council who worked at different levels to establish the institution in the interest of better legal education and higher standards of legal research and training. The promoters of the institution finally succeeded after thirteen long years of suspense and uncertainty, when the Karnataka Government established on August 29, 1987 through a Gazette Notification, the National Law School of India University at Bangalore under the National Law School of India Act (Karnataka Act 22 of 1986). The Act is a unique piece of legislation, which incorporates complete administrative and academic autonomy together with flexibility for innovation and experimentation in the pursuit of excellence by the University.

About College:

The idea of establishing a South Asian University (SAU) was mooted by the Prime Minister of India at the 13th SAARC Summit in Dhaka in 2005. The idea was for member countries to pool their resources for creation of a Centre of Excellence in the form of a University that would provide world-class facilities and professional faculty to students and researchers drawn from every country of the SAARC region.

Prof. Gowher Rizvi, the well-known historian, scholar and academic from Bangladesh was entrusted with the task of preparing a Concept Paper for SAU. Prepared after a series of consultations across the SAARC countries, the Concept Paper was submitted to the SAARC Governments to elicit their views. The idea of a South Asian University found favor in all SAARC Member States and an inter-ministerial Agreement for Establishment of South Asian University was signed on 04 April 2007, during the 14th SAARC Summit in New Delhi.
